Music Meditation

Shira leads and teaches sessions on Jewish music meditation. Using Jewish mystical and liturgical sources as a starting point, participants practice bypassing the intellect in order to explore meaning and inspiration through the medium of the musical soul. Chanting familiar texts and prayers, the group observes kavanah (deep intention) in the soul, mind, and body. Her contemporary Jewish and spiritual sound guides us through the deep experience of Jewish music as a spiritual practice.

Professional Development

Open your mouth, Take a deep breath, and Sing!

Repertoire Building in the Jewish Early Childhood Classroom:

Free yourselves and your children to sing!  Express your creative voices through song, rhythm, tones and the sheer delight of music.  Learn simple music for activities throughout the day, Jewish teachable moments, holidays, Torah, and for growing the imagination/soul.  We'll talk about how to use music effectively and how our songs are designed to build developmental skills.  Handout of lyrics and resources included.

Talking About God With Your Children:

There's no such thing as a God expert when talking about the divine with our children. Shira inspires teachers to tap into personal experience and feelings in order to open up and find their own language. Learn to identify "God Moments" throughout your day and how to use music and activities to honor them. No need to have answers and explanations, we'll discuss how to engage and encourage our children in this ongoing sacred journey.

Tot Shabbat for Rabbis, Cantors, and Lay Leaders:

Everyone deserves the opportunity to pray with children! It's an incredible experience when you can free yourself and be inspired by the children. Learn to translate and interpret the Shabbat prayers in the child's language. Develop a repertoire of tunes specifically written for children's worship and learn how to identify what melodies you already know that will work well for this age group. As we learned from our Chasidic Rebbes, the way into the imagination/soul is through story. Learn storytelling techniques and take home samples and plenty of resources. We will also discuss room set up, the role of the parents, props, and other things that can make or break a children's activity.

Torah Study

Trained by Amichai Lau Lavie in the art of Storahtelling and with Peter Pitzele in his work, Bibliodrama, Shira leads a highly creative Torah study. The goal is for everyone to climb inside, explore and identify with the characters, and leave with a feeling of ownership of their story. Translating the text in today's vernacular helps us find the relevance and contemporary meaning of these ancient stories and lessons. Best for groups elementary school age and up.
