Strauss/Warschauer Duo
Workshop
and Lecture Programs
Deborah Strauss and Jeff Warschauer of the
Strauss/Warschauer Duo have a variety of exciting workshops and
programs available for children, teens, adults and mixed age
groups.
Suitable venues include, but are not limited to: public
and private schools, Jewish day schools, Hebrew schools, community centers,
synagogues, libraries, colleges and universities.
Lecture-Demonstrations
Can be geared to all ages. No previous musical knowledge
required.
Klezmer for Kids! A fun and participatory
introduction to the world of klezmer music and Yiddish culture for school
audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Students sing, dance (space permitting),
and ask and answer questions.
Klezmer Music: From Old World to New Through
both live and recorded musical examples, and audience participation, we
follow klezmer music from its earliest roots in Eastern Europe through
its current revitalization.
Song of Songs: Shabbos, Music and Yiddish
This heymish, participatory program highlights the meaning and spirit
of the Sabbath through Yiddish song and melody.
Fostering Jewish Community Through Music: From Khasides
to the Klezmer Revival - Music has a special ability to foster
community and identity. Music and songs bring people together in times
of celebration and times of struggle. This workshop explores the modern
Jewish experience in Eastern Europe and North America in light of this
extraordinary bond between community and music.
Song Workshops
Yiddish Chorus (suitable for chorus, choir
and small groups) Utilizing school ensembles and/or forming special groups
for the workshop day(s), Strauss and Warschauer introduce the singers
to Yiddish song and language. Participants will sing both a capella and
with accompaniment, in unison and parts, depending upon age and ability.
The songs will be translated and contextualized to give the maximum feeling
for their origin, history and style. This workshop is suitable for all
ages and abilities.
Yiddish Songs Sing songs from the vast repertoire
of Yiddish folk and theater music. All songs are transliterated and translated.
This session is an excellent way for singing enthusiasts to learn about
the Jewish experience in Eastern Europe and in North America. This workshop
is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Nigunim Hasidic Nigunim (wordless melodies)
are powerful vehicles of spirituality and joy. Participants in this workshop
will experience the strength and beauty of this music first hand. This
workshop is suitable for all ages and abilities.
Instrumental Workshops
Klezmer Kapelye (suitable for orchestra, string
orchestra, band, jazz band and small ensembles) Utilizing school ensembles
and/or forming special ensembles for the workshop day(s), Strauss and
Warschauer introduce the musicians to klezmer music. Participants will
learn to play together in a real "klezmer style," using some written music,
but also learning by ear. This workshop can be geared to all ages and
abilities.
Fidl Kapelye (suitable for violins, violas,
'cellos and basses) The Fidl Kapelye, (string band) is an exciting way
for string players to experience an authentic old-world Yiddish musical
group. Using some written music, but especially learning by ear, participants
are immediately immersed in the style and performance practice of nineteenth-century
klezmorim (Yiddish musicians). This workshop can be geared to all ages
and abilities.
Mandolin Orchestra (suitable for mandolin,
guitar and other plucked strings, intermediate level and higher) Workshop
participants will explore both the repertoire of the traditional Jewish
mandolin orchestra as well as repertoire from the klezmer and Hasidic
traditions arranged for mandolin orchestra. This workshop has long been
a favorite of both participants and listeners!
Yiddish Dance Workshop
We encourage everyone to take part in Yiddish dancing. It
is an exuberant way to get the feel for Yiddish music. Deborah Strauss
leads the dances with live musical accompaniment by Jeff Warschauer and/or
student ensembles, time permitting. This workshop will be geared to the
needs and abilities of the participants, and is suitable for all ages.
And a Special Workshop for Both Singers
and Instrumentalists
The Song Within (suitable for singers and
instrumentalists, intermediate level and higher) This ensemble explores
the integral relationship between words and melody and between the song
and instrumental traditions in Yiddish music. Participants will learn
melodies from the klezmer instrumental tradition, as well as some of the
texts in Yiddish and/or Loshn-Koydesh (Rabbinical Hebrew-Aramaic) that
are associated with these melodies.
All workshops can include a student concert at the end
of the session(s).
