'ONE PEOPLE' - THE NEW CD FROM
DEBBIE FRIEDMAN
RELEASE DATE OCTOBER 17, 2006

JMG (Jewish Music Group) today announced the release of One People, the new CD from recording artist Debbie Friedman
Debbie Friedman is one of the most beloved musical artists in the world of Jewish music. Her song prayers are sung in more synagogues across the denominational lines than any other living composer. She is honored by Jewish organizations around the world, and she is a devoted teacher of music and text. "I believe each of us has a responsibility to put our gifts to good use," she explains. For the most part, Debbie - who sings and writes in both Hebrew and English - has focused her work on using music to reach out to people in the world who are looking for a spiritual home. "People are looking for ways to manage the chaos that sometimes takes over in our lives. They are looking for ways to subvert intolerance and think and act in new ways that might have the ripple effect. "In Debbie Friedman's mind, ONE person makes a difference "The teachings and traditions of our ancestors encompass the values of love and compassion and direct us to live lives that will ultimately nurture peace and promote spiritual exploration and commitment. Debbie's message of love and hope is not limited to the Jewish people. Friedman says: "It is time we stop looking at all of those things that separate us. There is much more we share in common as human beings than what separates us. We must start to look at one another to see what links us together as a community, as a people in pursuit of justice."
That universal appeal and message is at the core of Debbie's popularity and success as a musician and songwriters. Her new JMG release One People is the first studio album from Friedman in three years. Produced by Steven Miller (Sting, Backstreet Boys, Tears For Fears, LeAnne Rimes) the CD features songs that take Friedman's message and give it a magical meaning. For example, Debbie sings the title track, "One People" starting with just her voice and the piano. But as the song's lyrics pray for people to bond together in the name of peace, the instrumentation and choir voices build to a subtle crescendo that gives the whole song an aura of people coming together in peace, just as her lyrics are imploring them to do. The joyful "Hear Our Voices" blends a modern beat with ancient lyrics to create a jubilant song for anyone who loves any kind of music. The most contemporary mainstream song on the album is "Sow In Tears, Reap In Joy." It's lyrics are taken from the Bible and are delivered by a chorale behind Debbie's crystal clear vocals swelling into a memorable chorus.
"When I began writing my own music," explains Debbie Friedman, "it was only natural that my style would be in the folk genre since folk music was the very 'stuff' of our late 60's culture. I believe that we must have faith to know that change does not happen quickly, it takes time and persistence, but we human beings are responsible for one another. Having a social consciousness is demanded of us. It is, at our essence, who we are as a people." For Debbie, who herself has struggled with medical challenges, her message of faith, hope and always trying to stay positive has helped transform her own life as well as the lives of tens of thousands of Jews. Her own life difficulties have given her inspiration for her lyrics which then universalize her experiences to help others.
What Debbie Friedman has accomplished in the writing and recording of One People is to create a powerful recording that is destined to bring her to a new legion of devoted fans and to earn her her rightful place among the important artists of our time. One People is set for release on October 17, 2006.
